Glass walls, softened

A modern Austin house built around a pool courtyard, with floor-to-ceiling glass on three sides. Motorized light-filtering shades take the edge off the Texas sun without closing the house in.

The brief

Expansive glass, modulated light

1app for every shade
2roll styles
4 incassette on closed rolls

The house is all openness: a courtyard pool, sliding glass walls, stone and warm wood. The brief was to keep that feeling and still be able to sit in the living room at four in the afternoon.

Balmoral light-filtering roller shades run across the glass walls. Lowered, they turn hard sun into an even glow and hide the neighbors; raised, they disappear into the ceiling line.

Every shade is motorized. A Bond Bridge brings them into one phone app, so the whole west side of the house drops with one tap when the sun comes around.

How it came together

Motorized, then made to disappear

Consult

Samples on the glass at midday. Light filtering, not blackout: the rooms are for living in, and the view is the point.

Measure

Every pane of the glass walls measured by the installer so the shades line up across each run.

Make

Balmoral rollers made to measure with motors in every tube. Open roll where the ceiling is clean, closed 4 in cassettes where the headrail shows.

Install

Installed by Rolli, then every motor paired to the Bond Bridge and grouped by room in the app.

The details

What was specified

Fabric
Balmoral light filtering. Even glow by day, privacy without blocking the view.
Open roll
Exposed roll with cast aluminum brackets where the ceiling line is clean.
Closed roll
4 in cassette headrail where the top of the shade is in view.
Motors
Quiet motorization on every shade, raised and lowered at the touch of a button.
Control
Bond Bridge: every shade in one smartphone app, grouped by room.
Who did what
Rolli: consult, samples, measure, made to measure, motorization, installation.

“On a glass wall the shade is as big as the architecture. Open roll on a cast bracket keeps it honest; a cassette hides it where it should hide.”Rolli design team
