How the sun is placed

Sun position comes from astronomy-engine, an open-source astronomy library accurate to about an arcminute, with atmospheric refraction near the horizon. Times are accurate to about a minute and are shown in the home's local time zone, daylight saving included.

How heat on each wall is estimated

Each wall's heat figure is clear-sky direct sunlight striking a vertical surface, in watts or kilowatt-hours per square meter. Clouds, trees, neighboring buildings, and roof overhangs aren't modeled, so use the numbers to compare the sides of the home, not as an energy bill forecast.

How addresses are matched

Street addresses are matched with Google. If an address can’t be found, the study falls back to the center of its ZIP code or city, which shifts sun times by less than a minute. The direction the house faces matters far more, so set it carefully.
