Phifer SheerWeave vs Kleenscreen - Solar Screens Compared
10 min read

Comparison · Solar screen fabrics
SheerWeave or Kleenscreen? Same openness, different yarn.
Phifer SheerWeave and Texstyle Kleenscreen are the two solar screen names most U.S. roller shade buyers meet. Both come in 1%, 3% and 5% openness, both carry NFPA 701 and GREENGUARD Gold, and both are 10-year fabrics. They differ in the yarn under the coating, in weight, and in how much light their pale colors let through. Rolli fabricates Kleenscreen; this page restates both makers’ published sheets so you can compare them line by line.

Specification
Three fabric families, one table
Kleenscreen is one family in three openness weights. SheerWeave is a catalog; the two series that overlap Kleenscreen are the fiberglass 2000 / 2100 and the polyester 4001 / 4400 / 4000 / 4100. Values are restated from each maker’s current sheet; “not published” means the maker does not print the figure.

Light and heat
White and black, matched by openness
Tv visible transmittance, Ts solar transmittance, Rs solar reflectance, As solar absorptance, all in % for the fabric alone. Lower Tv means less glare; higher Rs means more heat sent back out before it reaches the room.

Kleenscreen values from the Texstyle cut sheet. SheerWeave values from the phifer.com tables, fabric installed internally at a 0° profile angle. Each maker publishes SHGC on a different glazing basis (Texstyle as a percentage with standard glass; Phifer as a ratio with ¼ in clear or 1 in insulating glass), so SHGC is not compared here.
What this means for your home
At the same openness the two fabrics see out about the same, and in black they measure almost identically: Tv 1% at 1% openness for both Kleenscreen Black and SheerWeave 4001 Ebony. Pick the dark colors by hand feel and price, not by the numbers.
The pale colors are where they part. Kleenscreen Pure White passes 16% of visible light at 1% openness; SheerWeave 4001 Chalk passes 4%. A white Kleenscreen room is brighter and glows more in direct sun; a Chalk SheerWeave room is dimmer with less glare. Both reflect most of the solar energy (Rs 65% and 83%).
Weight decides the motor. SheerWeave 4001 is 722 g/m², half again Kleenscreen 1% at 483 g/m², so a wide 4001 shade needs a larger motor and tube than the same window in Kleenscreen. SheerWeave 2000 fiberglass, at 488 g/m², sits level with Kleenscreen.
Fiberglass does not stretch, so a 2000-series shade hangs flat on very wide spans; polyester, in both Kleenscreen and the 4000 series, is softer in hand and lighter on the tube. Neither fabric gives privacy after dark.

Questions
SheerWeave vs Kleenscreen, answered
Is Kleenscreen the same fabric as SheerWeave?
No. They are made by different companies: Kleenscreen by Texstyle, SheerWeave by Phifer. Both are PVC-coated solar screens in 1%, 3% and 5% openness with NFPA 701 and GREENGUARD Gold, which is why they get specified against each other.
Which blocks more glare?
In dark colors they measure the same: Tv 1% for both at 1% openness. In white, SheerWeave 4001 Chalk (Tv 4%) blocks more than Kleenscreen 1% Pure White (Tv 16%). If the room has screens and you want a pale shade, that 12-point gap matters.
Which reflects more heat?
SheerWeave’s whites publish a higher solar reflectance: Chalk 4001 Rs 83% against Kleenscreen 1% Pure White Rs 65%. In dark colors both absorb about 90% or more and reflect 3 to 4%, so the color choice moves heat more than the brand does.
Does Phifer publish a SHGC I can compare with Texstyle’s?
Not on the same basis. Phifer prints SHGC with ¼ in clear single glass and 1 in insulating glass; Texstyle prints a percentage for fabric plus standard glass. Ask Rolli for the Texstyle figure on your glazing, or compare Ts and Rs, which both makers measure for the fabric alone.
Can Rolli make a shade in SheerWeave?
Rolli fabricates Kleenscreen, not SheerWeave. For a spec that names SheerWeave 4001, 4400, 4000 or 2000, Rolli matches on openness and Tv from the table above and sends free samples of the closest Kleenscreen color.
Which is better for a very wide window?
SheerWeave 2000 and the 4000 series roll to 126 in; Kleenscreen rolls to 118 in. Beyond those widths any solar screen needs a seam or two shades on one bracket. Fiberglass 2000 resists stretch on long spans; the polyester fabrics are lighter on the motor.
